Hatchet, chapter 11
challenge: A puzzle or difficult task which requires effort and concentration to solve or overcome; problem; obstacle; test

  • A challenge is something difficult that you have to work through. Sometimes challenges are fun, other times they can be scary—like in Hatchet. Challenges are like obstacles or puzzles. We all have different challenges that we work through. It could be something at school that is hard for you or something that you do outside of school. Sometimes families have challenges, too. A challenge doesn’t have to just be in the woods, like Brian’s challenges. You can deal with challenges anywhere.

Lesson 26:

Hatchet, chapter 13 and 14
Fallingwater
Tell students that a terrace is like a balcony or sundeck, which is open to the elements. Explain that the stone used to build the walls at Fallingwater was quarried (removed from the ground) about 500 feet west of the waterfalls. The red windowpanes are made of steel. The floors are made of polished, reflective stone to look wet. The terraces are made of ochre (yellowish) painted concrete. Explain that you can’t see the waterfall from inside the house, but you can hear it.

Lesson 33:

“What does it mean to ‘hook’ your audience?”
  • It means your audience really wants to hear your story. In writing, we want the people reading our story to get hooked on it. When someone is reading a story, we want it to sound fun and interesting. We want to hear what they say next.
