- A challenge is something difficult that you have to work through. Sometimes challenges are fun, other times they can be scary—like in Hatchet. Challenges are like obstacles or puzzles. We all have different challenges that we work through. It could be something at school that is hard for you or something that you do outside of school. Sometimes families have challenges, too. A challenge doesn’t have to just be in the woods, like Brian’s challenges. You can deal with challenges anywhere.

Tell students that a terrace is like a balcony or sundeck, which is open to the elements. Explain that the stone used to build the walls at Fallingwater was quarried (removed from the ground) about 500 feet west of the waterfalls. The red windowpanes are made of steel. The floors are made of polished, reflective stone to look wet. The terraces are made of ochre (yellowish) painted concrete. Explain that you can’t see the waterfall from inside the house, but you can hear it.
