I always have students repeat key words chorally (the whole class at the same time) at least twice. This gives ELLs an opportunity to try out the new language without being singled out. It also gives them a model of the correct pronunciation of the words.
Point to focus attention on words or pictures that you are discussing during a minilesson. Once their attention is directed, have them chorally repeat the word(s) or name the picture. Have them repeat the word two or three times.
If a student mispronounces a word during class, after their response I ask the entire class to repeat after me, and I pronounce it correctly (twice). I rarely single out a student; I want my students to feel comfortable speaking in my classroom. If you constantly correct an ELL, or any student for that matter, they will go back into their shell and hide. If you're going to correct a student's pronunciation or grammar, be gentle, and choose only one error to focus on.
In general, make it a team effort; we are all learning and working on our English together.
